The Basilica of St. Peter, part of Vatican City, is the most important church ever constructed under Christiandom. According to Matthew, when Jesus met Simon he said, \u201cAnd I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican City State, also known simply as the\u00a0Vatican<\/strong>, became independent from Italy and it is a distinct\u00a0territory\u00a0under \u201cfull ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction\u201d of the\u00a0Holy See<\/a>, itself a\u00a0sovereign entity<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0international law<\/a>, which maintains the city state\u2019s\u00a0temporal<\/a>,\u00a0diplomatic<\/a>, and spiritual\u00a0independence<\/a>. With an area of 49 hectares (121 acres) and a population of about 453,\u00a0it is the smallest state in the world by both area and population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you tour Vatican City the major attractions are:\u00a0St. Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/a>, the\u00a0Sistine Chapel<\/a>, and the\u00a0Vatican Museums<\/a>. The beautiful gardens and St. Peter\u2019s Square are also a \u201cmust visit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I visited, the temperature inside the Sistine Chapel was beyond comfortable \u2014 maybe 100 people were inside and only a narrow, meandering pathway existed between those people lying on their backs staring at the ceiling. The Vatican Museums house one of the world\u2019s most immense collections of ancient sculptures and Renaissance art \u2014 some 70,000 works in total, of which 20,000 or so are actively displayed in 24 interconnected galleries across 7 km of museum space. It\u2019s overwhelming \u2014and it\u2019s crowded. Pre-COVID numbers in 2019 recorded some 6.9 million folks through the turnstiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
