Saronic Islands

The Greek Islands of Aegina, Poros, Hydra are close enough to Athens to go to for the day by ferry from Athens’ port: Pireaus. When you think of Greek Islands you should think of whitewashed plaster houses ascending slopes from the sea — contrary to the Ionian Islands, the Saronic Islands’ have these iconic views.

Hydra, in the Saronic Gulf is one of the closest islands to Athens and is perhaps the most beautiful harbor in the Greek Islands. It has no wheeled vehicles — everything is delivered by horse or donkey. It is also famous because Leonard Cohen moved here in 1960 and wrote several songs, including “So Long, Marianne” and “Bird on the Wire”. And it was here, that he met Marianne, a young Norwegian woman of great beauty, high intelligence, deep sympathy and fun.
